Double cleansing is a staple of Korean skincare, and has recently become popularized in the United States. In essence, you wash your face twice. First, with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, sweat, and sebum. Then, with a water-based cleanser to more deeply cleanse pores and brighten your complexion. Think of it like shampooing and conditioning your hair!

There are many ways to double cleanse, and many products available. To get you started, here are our top five tips on trying out the method for yourself.

Take It Slow
As always, adjust your skincare routine slowly. Your skin is a biome and needs time to adapt to new products, so while you’re perfecting your routine, switch products only once per week. And when you’re washing your face, take your time to actually massage each product into your skin! Dermatologists recommend doing so for up to two minutes to get the most out of each active ingredient.

Mind Your Skin Type
In this day and age, there’s a skincare product for everything. Take care to assess your current situation: is your skin dry, oily, or acne-prone? Research items with active ingredients that work well with your conditions. Pro tip: cream cleansers are more hydrating than foaming ones, and jojoba oil is highly recommended for sensitive skin!

Dry With Intention
After putting all that work into washing your face, don’t just scrub it dry with a towel! Between your oil and water-based cleanses, simply pat dry with a clean towel, leaving a bit of moisture to soak into your skin.

Go Sustainable
Ideally, your skincare routine is something you do every day. Think of ways to fold in sustainable practices! Reusable cotton rounds are readily available alternatives to disposable makeup wipes. And once perfect your oil-based cleanser recipe, you can always make it yourself, saving time, plastic, and money!

Lock It In
Once your skin is properly cleansed, lock in all that goodness with a daytime or overnight moisturizer. Again, avoid the urge to dry – instead, allow it to soak in, leaving your skin glowing and refreshed.
